Group Risk Management: understanding all risks – from the economic to the political – that could affect our global business, and offering guidance to all parts of the bank
Job Purpose
• To provide leadership to the Credit Evaluation Managers and Officers, while ensuring the delivery of a professional service to the business units, by assessing and evaluating credit facilities (new and/or existing) based on sound credit and financial principles which supports the minimising of risk to the bank in both Lifestyle and Entrepreneur space
• Training and guidance to Credit Evaluation Managers (CEM) and Officers (CEO) with the aim of taking timeous corrective action thereby minimising the probability of default and/or write-off where deterioration of circumstances has been identified.
• Take ownership for the performance of the SE Book’s performance in terms of provisions, credit loss ratios (CLR), Pre-NPL and NPL for a specified region by engaging with relevant department responsible for such functions, for example CRC, CRR, etc
• Give input to the strategy and development of improved processes aimed at improving TAT, costs and efficiencies
• To take ownership in growing the book by ensuring that quality decisions are made and proper hind-sighting is done.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities
Key responsibilities
• Effectively lead a team of Credit Evaluation Managers and Officers.
• Creating a skilled management team through the attraction, development and performance of staff, by promoting the right skills, competencies and business accountability.
• Actively hind sighting lending decisions to ensure that correct procedures, mandates and Credit policies are being followed in the approval of facilities, which will prevent new NPL’s.
• Be involved with the Risk area to provide solutions for CRC matters
• Regular perusal of relevant internal and external communication, such as fanouts, circulars, economic reviews on industries and financial or industry publications to ensure that any development, new requirements or external risks are properly taken cognisance of in lending decisions or conditions of lending.
• Staff training internally (credit staff) and externally by means of visiting branches/Business Banking Suites and/or accommodate POR staff in the Credit Centre with the emphasis on the requirement to make a meaningful assessment of the credit risks involved.
• Contracting with direct reports with regard to performance and development plans.
• Performance appraisals of direct reports and moderation of subordinates’ appraisals.
• Regular interaction with Credit Risk Managers and Team Leader to discuss strategy and action plans to manage irregular accounts and accounts identified as being high risk.
• Control of agreed portfolio of accounts in a region, including assessment of credit applications and authority sought requests within the laid down time frame.
• Continuous Improvement of processes
• Attend to escalated and or arbitrated matters
• Ensuring that lending decisions are based on the correct information recorded with special reference to collateral and bank trade information. Instructions to credit control staff and business units to attend to existing collateral discrepancies.
• Attend Credit Review Committee and BSU meetings
• Build relationships with Local Markets and Business
• Responsible for proper MIS reports for the team

o Quality Pay-no-Pay Decisions
o Portfolio performance.
o Minimal inflow of accounts to the Business Assist space
o Low bad rates on decisions made within the evaluations space
Key dimensions of the job (managerial positions only)
• Total number of staff responsible for: At least 6 CEM’s and 3 Officers
• Lending limit of at least R10m
• Operating costs/budget.

Preferred Qualification and Experience
Qualifications
• Matric (Grade 12)
• Tertiary qualification such as a Business Degree, Diploma or similar qualification.

Experience
o At least 5 years related Credit experience at management level in a Credit environment. (Short-listing item)
o Experience in managing a team of people is a pre-requisite (Shortlisting item)
o Current Credit Lending mandate of at least R5million (pre-requisite)

Knowledge/Technical Skills/Expertise
Knowledge
• Above average knowledge of Credit Risk Assessment principles, Personal financial statements and an understanding of the practical application of the theory.
• Interpretation of Financial Statements
• Knowledge of the Bank’s lending products (Business Lending), including VAF, Current Accounts, Personal Loans, Home Loans and Card.
• Basic knowledge of Collections and Recoveries
• Knowledge and understanding of Collateral in terms of how to value it and what is required to perfect it.
• Sound knowledge of the Banks Credit policy and procedures
• Knowledge of HR, IR and related procedures
• Knowledge of applicable legislation, for example NCAA, FICA, etc.
• Interpretation of Financial Statements
